Fairies and Dragons
The Fairies and Dragons piece is an extra large slab built earthenware tower. This piece is my second expression of surreal and abstract art on pottery, the first being the Fairies tower in my first range.
My initial aim was to create a story that would flow around the entire piece, so each side showed a separate part of the story. When I began my initial sketches, I was drawn again to using fairies, I loved the way than can be made to appear so graceful and mystical. I also wanted to include dragons as part of the story for the piece, because like fairies they can be so elegant and graceful. Once I had decided on the main characters, an amazing story for the piece just came to me, a story where the dragons and fairies unite to a common cause, to save laughter and song stolen from our world by a wicked witch.
The story for the piece sent me on a visual journey to a mystical world of fairytale creatures and landscapes. It sent me to a world where the power of dragons and fairies knows no bounds and together they pursue the wicked witch through a fairytale wilderness of floating mountains and castles. Through the fairies’ spells unicorns appear and join the cause.
Once I had developed and initial sketch of the fairytale story, I began working on potential colour ways. I wanted to use colours that would enhance the fairytale feel, bright oranges and yellows worked extremely well on this piece. The fairytale feel was further enhanced by the careful use of lustre to enhance features on the piece.
For me the Fairies and Dragons piece is about reigniting our imagination, which can transport us off instantly to magical places.
