In this design I have tried to bring the arts together. For me William Shakespeare is the greatest playwright of all time. His work has travelled through the ages and is still as relevant in its meaning and portrayal of life as it was when it was originally written and performed. Much of his work is inspiring and touches people on many levels. I wanted to create a visual interpretation of his work.
It was extremely difficult to select one of Shakespeare’s many plays to focus on and portray. Did I choose a tragedy, a comedy, a history play? There were so many potential possibilities. In the end I chose the story of the star crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet because it seemed to have four major scenes which would translate into the art form I was using to enable the design to tell the story - the balcony, the wedding, the duel and the suicide.
Shakespeare’s work pays great attention to detail, his flowing language conveys emotions and describes events in such a powerful way. I wanted to exploit the form of the characters and include a high level of decorative tube lining to mirror the detailed literary work of Shakespeare.
In this piece I used my designs to punctuate the story of the star crossed lovers we know so well. With this piece the aim was to stir individual meanings we all have for Shakespeare’s play. The aim of it is to bring forth what the story means to everyone on an individual level.
I needed to ensure that the story was told using four images on the sides of the tower. This proved extremely time consuming but I feel that I have achieved my goal and the overall effect is quite remarkable and unusual.
This tower is only available in the larger size as it was impossible to maintain a quality of work which was acceptable on the smaller towers and I did not want to compromise or change and simplify the design.
Recommended retail price £1716.
The large towers are 17” high by 6” wide at the base and 4” wide at the top (all measurements are approximate).
