Kilns producing pottery have been alongside us for thousands of years, shaping the way we live and influencing our culture. The ceramic industry has catered for our needs and desires by producing beautifully practical earthenware vessels and plates to works of fine art that will be treasured forever.
The inspiration for this piece is the famous bottle kilns that once dominated skylines in northern England. These kilns produced some of the treasures of our modern era.
I reflected on my thoughts and feelings when I use my own kiln to fire the ceramic artwork that I have created, the sense of anticipation, the excitement, the feeling that anything could be possible. For me the process of firing pottery is like making dreams come true. There was only one name I could give to this design which celebrates the famous bottle kilns…Fired Dreams.
I throw this piece by hand and when almost dry I etch into the surface to create the brickwork. I wanted the dreams that were carefully cosseted inside to be visible and real, so I developed a cut away section so the treasures inside can be seen.
The Fired Dreams piece is approximately 7 and a half inches high and is limited to 20.
